Drug and Alcohol Testing for Your Employees

Employee drug screenings, also known as substance abuse and monitoring services, are an important part of workplace safety. Employees who are impaired by drugs or alcohol can be a danger to themselves and others, making them a liability to your organization. Pre-employment and random drug testing helps reduce the risk of worksite substance abuse. In addition to the drug screenings outlined below, our occupational medicine services can help conduct a Reasonable Suspicion Training program and Drug and Alcohol Consortium.

5-Panel and 12-Panel Instant Drug Screen

Our occupational medicine services provide 5 Panel and 12 Panel instant drug testing using a urine sample. All testing is overseen by our Medical Review Officer and performed at our in-house laboratories with no appointment necessary.

Alcohol Breathalyzers

A breath-alcohol test is used to determine how much alcohol is in the blood by measuring the amount of alcohol exhaled. This test can be used for random testing, reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing. All WellNow Urgent Care staff members are trained breath alcohol technicians (BAT). Results are ready the same day the test is performed; confirmation testing is done on all positive results and your designated representative is contacted following each positive test.

All of the breath alcohol equipment used at WellNow is listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) conforming product list for Evidential Devices, which are the only devices certified for conducting an alcohol confirmation test under 49 CFR part 40. Each test is carefully reviewed by our Medical Review Officer for quality assurance.

DOT/Non-DOT Drug Screen

From 5- and 12-Panel Drug Screens to alcohol breathalyzers, our occupational medicine services make the laborious process of drug screening simple and easy for you and your employees. In addition to providing pre-employment testing, we can help maintain a drug and alcohol consortium that provides randomized drug testing to ensure your employees remain drug-free. All drug screening results are reviewed by our own Medical Review Officer which eliminates the time spent sending results to an external reviewer.

Hair Test

Hair testing is able to detect a pattern of repetitive drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine drug testing, which may only detect drug use within the past two or three days. A hair test is the most effective way to evaluate long-term patterns of use, making it an excellent option for a pre-employment testing program.

During a hair collection, the collector cuts approximately 100-120 strands of hair from the crown of the employee’s head and secures the sample in foil. After the chain-of-custody documentation is completed, the hair is sent to a lab for testing. Since hair samples are obtained under direct supervision of the collector, the sample adulteration or specimen substitution is minimized. If an employee does not have enough scalp hair, body hair can also be utilized.


A pre-employment drug test usually takes place after a conditional job offer, and is performed to help prevent the hiring of an individual who may have an issue with substance abuse. Substance abuse within the workplace leads to safety issues and decreased productivity.


DOT post-accident testing is performed in accordance with CFR 49 part 38.303. All Non-DOT testing will also follow CFR 49 part 38.303, unless your company policy states differently. All testing should be performed as soon as possible following an accident. A breath alcohol test should be performed within two hours of the accident, but no longer than eight hours after the accident has occurred to ensure accurate results.

All drug testing should be performed within 32 hours and it is recommended that employees do not return to work until all results have been obtained.

Random Drug Screening

A random drug and alcohol testing program helps to provide a deterrent to substance abuse in the workplace. Random testing is performed by placing identifying information in a testing pool, also known as a consortium. From this, a selection is then computer generated to be tested for substance abuse. All participants have an equal chance to be selected and tested during each selection period.

This testing should be discreetly announced to the employee who should report to the testing facility immediately following notification.
